On September 23, 2026, the *Symposium on Technology and Application of Land‑Geological Carbon Metrology* was successfully held at China University of Geosciences (Wuhan). The event was hosted by Hubei Provincial Administration for Market Regulation, jointly organized by Hubei Provincial Center for Land‑Geological Carbon Metrology, the Faculty of Geography and Information Engineering of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), and Beijing Lijia United Technology Co., Ltd., and co‑organised by Hubei Provincial Station for Surveying and Mapping Quality Supervision and Inspection.
Centering on key technologies, core instruments and typical application cases for land‑geological carbon metrology, the symposium invited experts and scholars from multiple institutions, including the Aerospace Information Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Meteorological Observation Centre of the China Meteorological Administration, China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Soil Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing, Fujian Normal University, and Campbell Scientific China (Kangbao Zhixin Measurement Technology (Beijing) Co., Ltd.). They shared research progress and practical achievements in land‑geological carbon metrology. Representatives from universities and technical backbones of research institutes attended and exchanged ideas at the event.

The conference kicked off at 9:00 a.m. The opening ceremony was presided over by Sun Li, Party Secretary of the Faculty of Geography and Information Engineering. Xie Jin, Director‑General of the Metrology Division of Hubei Provincial Administration for Market Regulation, and Li Pengfei, Vice‑Dean of the Science and Technology Development Institute of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), delivered opening remarks in sequence.

In his speech, Director‑General Xie Jin outlined China’s national strategic arrangements for carbon peaking and carbon neutrality as well as the background of carbon metrology work. He pointed out that with the advancement of the “Dual Carbon” initiative, the value of carbon emission accounting, monitoring and data quality management has become increasingly prominent. Carbon metrology provides solid fundamental support for delivering the “Dual Carbon” goals.

Vice‑Dean Li Pengfei introduced the university’s disciplinary and research strengths and the construction progress of Hubei Provincial Center for Land‑Geological Carbon Metrology. He stated that the faculty will keep promoting deep integration between cutting‑edge technological research and real‑world application scenarios, and help translate scientific research outcomes into tangible productive forces for regional green and low‑carbon development.

In the morning report session, Researcher Xiao Qing from the Aerospace Information Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences, first presented outcomes of EcoTest, a joint test and demonstration project for ecological monitoring technologies in the Heihe River Basin.

Researcher Wang Shaoqiang from the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, gave a special presentation on ecosystem carbon removal.

Senior Engineer Zhang Xiaochun from the Meteorological Observation Centre of the China Meteorological Administration systematically illustrated greenhouse gas background observation in China and its development requirements.

General Manager Sun Baoyu from Beijing Lijia United Technology Co., Ltd. shared practical solutions and hands‑on experience for three‑dimensional ecosystem carbon‑sink monitoring from a technical implementation perspective.

In the afternoon session, Associate Professor Huang Chunbo of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) discussed new ecological restoration models and carbon‑sink metrology for abandoned open‑pit mining areas.

Senior Engineer Zhou Wei from the Institute of Soil Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing, interpreted the application of automatic farmland carbon‑flux observation and accounting systems.

Huang Xiaoli, Technical Engineer at Beijing Lijia United Technology Co., Ltd., shared practical field cases for soil greenhouse‑gas flux measurement technologies and applications.

Researcher Miao Guofang from Fujian Normal University focused on the fundamental theories and applied research of solar‑induced chlorophyll fluorescence.

Associate Researcher Zhang Leiming from the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, summarised technical approaches and applications for ecosystem flux observation.

Engineer Li Yanlei from Campbell Scientific China (Kangbao Zhixin Measurement Technology (Beijing) Co., Ltd.) introduced carbon‑water flux data processing, quality control and eddy‑covariance products.

To acknowledge the active participation and support from all experts, scholars and attendees, an online lucky draw was arranged to enhance engagement and fun.

This symposium brought together stakeholders from administrative authorities, universities, research institutes and industrial enterprises. It boosted exchanges among scientific research, metrology practice and industrial application, and built a communication platform for technological innovation and outcome deployment of land‑geological carbon metrology.
Through exchanges at this event, faculty and students have gained deeper insights into the technologies and applications of land‑geological carbon metrology.
Selected presentation slides from this conference will be gradually released via our official WeChat account. Please stay tuned.
